Cellulite refers to the dimpled and lumpy appearance of the skin.
The dimpled appearance of cellulite is caused by fat deposits that distort the connective tissue beneath the skin. It typically occurs in females and is more likely to affect individuals who lead a sedentary life style, have a family history of cellulite or are pregnant. People who smoke, sit or stand for long periods of time and/or have diets that are rich in fat and carbohydrates but low in fibre are likely to have a greater amount of cellulite.
Areas affected by cellulite include the thighs, hips and buttocks.
There are no adverse health consequences associated with the condition but it’s appearance can cause cosmetic concern for the affected individual.
At Bedford Skin Clinic, we recommend maintaining a healthy weight by eating a balanced diet and engaging in regular physical activity. Maintaining hydration and smoking cessation can also help reduce the appearance of cellulite. We are proud to offer VelaShape, the only cellulite treatment approved by the FDA for body contouring and improving the appearance of cellulite. VelaShape combines radiofrequency, infrared light energy, vacuum effect and mechanical massage. Usually a full course of VelaShape is required to produce a significant improvement in the appearance of cellulite. In some individuals we advise subcision, a procedure involving the breaking up of connective tissue bands with the use of a needle. Subcision is usually combined with microneedling and platelet rich plasma treatment to achieve optimal results.
