Stretch marks are narrow parallel streaks or lines that occur on the surface of the skin caused by rapid growth or stretching.
Stretch marks are caused when the skin is stretched rapidly such as during pregnancy, significant weight gain, or adolescent growth spurts, or when skin is put under tension during the healing process, (usually near joints). The areas that are typically affected by stretch marks include the stomach, upper thighs and upper arms and chest.
They are a normal part of puberty for most boys and girls.
New research suggests that one in two women suffer psychological distress due to stretch marks. Stretch marks can have a negative impact on body confidence and can influence the way people dress.
At Bedford Skin Clinic, we offer a combination of microneedling (dermapen) and platelet rich plasma for stretch marks. In most cases these combination of treatments result in a significant improvement in the appearance of the affected areas. In some individuals we advise subcision, a procedure which involves breaking up connective tissue bands with the use of a needle. This can also be combined with microneedling and platelet rich plasma treatment to achieve optimal results.
