Frown lines, also known as the glabellar lines, are the vertical lines between the eye brows and nose. These are typically visible whilst frowning or squinting i.e. while reading a book or using a computer.
Frown lines are caused by the contraction of muscles used for frowning. This involves the procerus and two corrugator muscles, one on each side of the procerus. When we are young, we have dynamic frown lines (frown lines only visible whilst frowning) but as we age frown lines can become static (frown lines visible even when we are not frowning).
At Bedford Skin Clinic we offer Botox as the first line treatment for frown lines. Botox as a standalone treatment is very effective for this problem and is the only treatment required for the majority. However, for deep static lines (lines present without frowning), a combination of Botox and dermal fillers can produce the best results. Besides Botox there is a range of other treatments available to address frown lines. These include Platelet Rich Plasma and for clients who would prefer not to have injectable treatments, we offer microneeedling (Dermapen, Dermastamp and Dermaroller), chemical peels, microdermabrasion and laser treatments.
We advise our clients to be conscious of how often they are frowning and reduce this wherever possible. For example, squinting while reading can be due to problems with eye sight indicating the need for prescription glasses. Adhering to a diet rich in antioxidants (fresh fruit, vegetables, vitamins and minerals) smoking cessation, as well as avoiding sun beds and excessive sun exposure can all help to reduce the appearance of frown lines.
